Uh, where's the beef? Director-writer Michael Goldenberg has created a pair of Peter Pan-fried characters who are professionally competent but personally retarded. Then she comes back because she realizes she really, really loves him. But he wants instant perfection and she's afraid so she gets hinky and leaves. Lewis plies Lisa with masses of flowers and they fall in love. She's an ambitious investment banker who's cute, but she's sad, too, because she was raised by a drunk guy. Then he spies Lisa (Masterson) through a window one night. Slater plays Lewis, a florist who's cute but sad, because his wife and baby died in childbirth. Where's the Beef? N But the last half of the movie is the kind of random nightmare orgy that usually comes after the title sequence. For a while, director Robert Rodriguez puts on a good show.
(People morphing into vampires! Faces melting like candles! Limbs flying!) The deranged hook of From Dusk Till Dawn is that it starts out as the first movie and turns, on a dime, into the second. The first is a moody thriller about two brothers (Clooney and Tarantino) who pull off a bank job, take a family hostage and head for Mexico. Co-written by Xiu and director Hanawa Yukinari, the film suffers an occasional lapse in continuity, but is fascinating both for its evenhanded look at life among Tokyo's alien population, as well as for its attempts to capture visually the rhythm of the city without endings. He looks to the sayings of Confucius for guidance and demonstrates something close to chivalry when a young Japanese woman (Takahashi) seeks his assistance in locating another Zhou, whom she claims is her elder sister's boyfriend. Despite all this, Zhou does not see himself as a bad person. A native Chinese who has lived in Japan's capital for five years, he is involved in a seemingly endless round of scams, selling everything from forged passports to soap "guaranteed" to move fat.
